ABOUT GIRLS PREPARATORY SCHOOL:

Girls Preparatory School (GPS) was founded in 1906 to provide girls with the necessary courses to pursue a college education. GPS has proudly graduated almost 6,000 young women since then. Currently, 130 faculty and staff serve 500 girls in grades 6-12 with a college preparatory curriculum that includes a full complement of humanities, arts, and STEM courses, and cocurricular programs of leadership development, athletics, performing arts, and community engagement.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Office of Admission is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the entry-level position of Admission Counselor. Reporting to the Director of Admission and Enrollment Management, the Admission Counselor will be part of a dynamic, goal-driven team responsible for recruiting, enrolling, and retaining students for grades 6 through 12. This individual will manage a caseload of prospective students from point of inquiry onward, review applications for admission, and advise prospective families, school counselors, placement directors, and other constituencies about GPS and the admission process.

The Admission Counselor must have the willingness and ability to work some extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as required. This is a salaried, full-time, 12-month position. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Director of Admission and Enrollment Management, this staff member will:

  • Assist in the development and execution of a strategic vision for recruiting, enrolling, and retaining highly-qualified students with diverse experiences and backgrounds in the Middle School and Upper School;
  • Manage a caseload of families from point of inquiry through matriculation, which includes facilitating their relationships with the GPS and communicating our value proposition;
  • Accurately and professionally represent GPS to prospective students and their families through on-campus and off-campus admission events; 
  • Evaluate applications for admission in an efficient, organized, and unbiased way in accordance with the Office’s method of review; 
  • Help to plan, execute, and staff on-campus and off-campus admission events; 
  • Conduct campus tours and interviews, as well as facilitate events for prospective students;
  • Assist the Director of Admission and Enrollment Management with managing both the student and parent ambassador programs;
  • Develop positive long-term relationships with teachers, school counselors, and placement personnel at feeder schools and community-based organizations. 
  • Engage faculty, staff, administrators, current students, current families in the admission process;
  • Share responsibility for meeting institutional enrollment goals;.
  • Provide a welcoming presence and helpful attitude when engaging with both internal and external audiences;
  • Ensure professional and effective telephone, mail, and email communications; 
  • Develop a strong understanding of the admission system (BlackBaud) and the customer relation management software (Hubspot);
  • Assist the Director of Admission and Enrollment Management with the re-enrollment of students if needed; and
  • Other responsibilities as determined by the Head of School, Chief Advancement Officer, or Director of Admission and Enrollment Management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in an associated field;
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team in order to meet project and task deadlines as required;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the admission process at private or independent middle and/or high schools preferred; 
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides) experience required; 
  • Familiarity with database systems strongly preferred;
  • Proficiency in HubSpot and Basecamp a plus;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and public-speaking skills, in addition to the ability to communicate effectively by phone and email, as well as through virtual and in-person settings, with many different audiences;
  • Excellent planning, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to think in innovative and strategic ways; 
  • Perform duties independently with a high level of professionalism and accuracy in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and juggle many projects concurrently;
  • Work effectively both independently and collaboratively and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills; and
  • Collegiality and eagerness to collaborate with fellow faculty and staff members.
