Position: Language Arts/Reading Teacher for 6th, 7th, & 8th Grades

Reports To: Head of School, Assistant Head of School, and Dean of Faculty

Organization Description: As one of 43 Nativity Miguel Schools, Durham Nativity School is a faith-based private middle school for 5th-8th grade boys of low socioeconomic status who desire to succeed and show strong academic and leadership potential. The mission of Durham Nativity School is to prepare our young men academically, socially, and emotionally for the most esteemed private high schools and then assist them in attaining their goal of attending the college or university of their choice. In addition, DNS is committed to developing young men intellectually as catalysts of community change through their weekly participation in community service projects.

Description: Durham Nativity School is seeking highly motivated, highly qualified, and creative Language Arts/Reading/Writing Teacher for 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades who upholds and promotes the Mission, Vision, and Philosophy of the Durham Nativity School. This teacher should be one who can teach the state and national standards/curriculum for Writing and Reading through creative, exciting, and motivating instructional strategies which address the learning styles of the students. The teacher should have a clear understanding of the scope and sequence of the content area to differentiate instruction, as necessary, for each student. In addition, the teacher should have a personal love for reading classical and contemporary literature to invoke critical thinking skills of the students creating a relevant, yet rigorous standard in the classroom. This candidate should have experience with instructing students in the writing process and integrating writing mechanics within the context of composition instruction. Finally, this teacher should have a wonderful grasp of curriculum integration so that the students can experience reading and writing across disciplines.

Requirements: In order to be considered for this position, the applicant must show proof of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or relevant field (English, Literature, Reading, Writing, etc.)
  • Positive evaluations from current/former supervisors


Preferences: In order to be preferred for this position, the applicant must show proof of the above and the following:

  • Professional Development/Training in effective Reading and Writing Instruction
  • Knowledge of or Experience in Differentiated Instruction
  • Knowledge of or Experience in Project-Based Learning
  • Knowledge of or Experience in Balanced Approach to Literacy (Guided Reading, Literature Circles, Word Study, etc.)
  • Knowledge of or Experience in Learning-Focused/Standards Based Teaching
  • Knowledge of or Experience in Curriculum Mapping/Backwards Planning


Compensation:  Commensurate with experience and abilities and reflective of salary levels in teaching
