Position Objective

Mountain Sun Community School is seeking a compassionate and dynamic Primary Lead Teacher to guide children aged 3 to 6 in a vibrant and respectful learning environment. In partnership with an Assistant Teacher, the Lead Teacher fosters the holistic development of each child—academically, emotionally, physically, creatively, and socially—through Montessori pedagogy, connection to nature, and inclusive community practices.

Works with: Mountain Sun faculty, staff, and families

Responsibilities

Children

  • Guide each child in discovering academic skills and independence through Montessori lessons and materials.

  • Observe and document individual progress across developmental domains.

  • Foster peaceful conflict resolution, empathy, and emotional resilience.

  • Support self-care routines and practical life skills with compassion and patience.

  • Ensure a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every child feels a sense of belonging.

Classroom Environment

  • Prepare and maintain a beautiful, developmentally appropriate classroom that reflects the sensitive periods of early childhood.

  • Curate materials and rotate resources to reflect the seasons, cultural diversity, and children’s interests.

  • Collaborate in designing and using outdoor spaces for exploration, creativity, and community connection.

  • Model respect, cooperation, and joy in learning as the foundation of the classroom culture.

Parents

  • Build open, respectful relationships with families grounded in partnership and mutual understanding.

  • Communicate regularly about student progress, classroom experiences, and the school’s educational approach.

  • Offer thoughtful parent-teacher conferences and accessible written reports twice yearly.

  • Prepare weekly newsletters to keep families connected to classroom life and community events.

  • Engage with families and specialists when additional support is needed to best serve each child.

Assistant Teacher

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and clear communication with the Assistant Teacher and other classroom support personnel.

  • Share observations, offer guidance, and collaborate on classroom planning and group activities.

  • Foster a supportive and respectful teaching team environment.

General

  • Nurture a harmonious classroom community where children of all backgrounds and temperaments thrive.

  • Participate fully in faculty meetings, school events, and professional development aligned with the school’s mission.

  • Uphold and model the values of Mountain Sun Community School as described in the Family and Staff Handbooks.

Qualifications

  • B.A. in Education or related field

  • Early Childhood Montessori certification (MACTE-accredited) strongly preferred

  • Experience and comfort with outdoor and nature-based education

  • Deep respect for the unique journey of each child

  • Commitment to social-emotional learning, peace education, and equity
