Position:   Social Studies Teacher                                     Reports to:  Head of Middle School

Division:    Middle School                                                    FLSA Status:   Professional Exempt

Employed:  Full time, 10 months, onsite                           Direct Reports:  None

 

Job Summary

Brookstone seeks to employ a Middle School social studies teacher who is energetic, enthusiastic, and dedicated to a whole-child approach.  An expert in both child development and a deep knowledge of content and instructional best practices is a must. In addition, a desire to be both innovative and accepting of the division's approach to learning is essential. Collegiality and cooperation are hallmarks of the Brookstone Middle School teachers, as well as a proactive mentality and a commitment to being “all in” when needed.

 

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Teaching and executing lessons for history that foster engagement, goal setting, and a love of learning; is familiar with inquiry-based and project-based learning styles

  • An ability to both teach the facts as well as guide students in critical and analytical thinking; an understanding of the major concepts in science and their application to the curriculum

  • Differentiating instruction to meet the needs of ALL students in the classroom

  • A focus on the academic and social-emotional experiences of students through intentional lessons on core values, individual development and leadership, and community commitment 

  • Effective use of technology to enhance student learning in the classroom and for virtual lessons; keeps abreast of changes in technological innovation as it relates to curriculum and instruction

  • Assessing student performance, providing quarterly academic updates, grades, and communicating with parents in a timely manner

  • Working collaboratively with parents to strengthen the educational experiences of the student; leading and facilitating parent conferences, keeping parents abreast of student progress, and establishing an overall positive rapport

  • Collaborating with division and department members in a respectful and professional manner; Actively participating in collaborative planning for both academic and social purposes

  • Demonstrating habits of being a lifelong learner which includes staying current with research and best practices and continuing professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. 

  • Supervision of clubs, class trips (possible overnight), and daily break and lunch duties

  • Effective oral and written expression

  • Upholding and enforcing board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public

  • Making appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required by the Head of Middle School

  • All other duties assigned

 

 

Key Qualifications

 

Education:  The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree or higher in Middle Grades Education or Masters in a related field with experience, certification, and/or undergraduate degree in Middle Grades  education, and at least 3 years of experience teaching middle school or high school.

Physical Requirements

Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM - 3:45 PM.  Required special events, as needed.
