Major Responsibilities:
To carry out the Lower School physical education program and Health Curriculum consistent with Cape Fear Academy’s philosophy and mission statement maintain high level of professionalism and support of the school at all times.
Curriculum Design and Implementation
Develop and deliver a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate physical education curriculum, that aligns with national and state standards, while supporting the mission and values of the school. Develop and deliver health related lessons to students in grades 3-5, such as fitness, nutrition, healthy habits and human growth and development curriculum. Provide learning experiences and programs that challenge every child. Model passion in learning.
Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring
Assess student performance in physical education and health through formative and summative assessments. Maintain accurate records and contribute to report cards and narrative comments.
Faculty Collaboration
Partner with classroom teachers, counselors, and learning support specialists to promote student wellness and integrate movement-based learning across disciplines.
Event Planning and Participation
Plan and lead Lower School wellness events such as Field Day, fitness challenges, and health-related assemblies. Support school-wide events that promote community engagement and physical activity.
Classroom Management and Safety
Create a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment. Ensure proper use and maintenance of PE equipment and facilities. Establish clear expectations for student behavior and participation.
Social-Emotional Learning Integration
Embed social-emotional learning competencies into PE lessons, emphasizing teamwork, perseverance, empathy, and respectful communication. Encourage students to discover interests and develop passions.
Values Integration and Culture Model integrity, respect, and accountability in daily behaviors and expect the same of students. Exercise the highest degree of integrity and respect in the treatment of colleagues, students and their parents. Protect the confidential academic and personal information regarding students and families. Faculty represent and support CFA positively in the community.
Parent Communication and Education
Maintain open and proactive communication with families regarding student progress, curriculum goals, and opportunities to support physical wellness at home.
Professional Development
Stay informed on current research, trends, and best practices in physical education and health instruction. Participate in ongoing professional learning and contribute to the school’s professional culture.
Wellness Leadership
Support school-wide wellness initiatives, including student mindfulness, nutrition education, and faculty/staff wellness programming.
Other Duties
Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication skills required in order to communicate the powerful and positive role of physical education in the moral, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of students.
Skills in conflict resolution and the ability to lead by activity and example required.
Must be able to support equitably all sports and balance girls’ and boys’ physical education.
Require to be able to promote and model good sportsmanship. Candidate should be experienced and knowledgeable in physical education and should have an interest in and ability to contribute to extracurricular activities.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience: Three years’ experience in teaching physical education in a school setting.
Equivalency: Directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience may be considered in place of the above requirements.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Must be able to use a computer and other office equipment effectively.
Mobility sufficient to navigate efficiently within our entire campus, including fields and other environments with uneven ground.
Must be able to manage equipment and technology utilized in position.
Ability to move safely on uneven terrain.
Hearing sufficient to hear vocalizations from a distance and speech sufficient to instruct and interact indoors or outdoors with groups of students.
May be inside or outside and must be able to adapt to weather conditions.
