Position Overview

The Middle School Science Teacher will develop and implement an engaging curriculum and teach daily science classes for middle school students. We seek candidates who can teach a combination of at least two of the following disciplines: environmental science, biology, astronomy, chemistry and physics. The FSA science program endeavors to create an active learning environment that engages a diverse student body. Teacher applicants should be excellent collaborators with students and faculty and also be able to work independently to support student success. FSA’s classrooms are inclusive. The student body represents a broad spectrum of learning styles. Successful teachers engage students using teaching methods and strategies that are creative and individualized. 

This role includes active participation in middle school life, including advising, lunch and recess duties, supervising field trips, and attending some student events. The teacher will also contribute to the school community through admissions-related events and regular student progress reporting. Attendance at several after-school and evening activities is required throughout the year.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Teaching:

  • Design and deliver engaging, student-centered science lessons for grades 5–8

  • Develop a curriculum that aligns with the school’s mission and educational philosophy

  • Foster a learning environment that supports students’ social, emotional, and academic growth

  • Use a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student progress and adjust instruction accordingly

  • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers about student progress through emails, conferences, newsletters, grade reports, etc. 

  • Maintain accurate and timely student records, including grades and reports

  • Lead a homeroom advisory designed to create a culture of connectedness, promote character development, and connect Quaker values to students’ understanding of themselves and the world around them

• Community Engagement:

  • Champion initiatives that promote inclusivity, diversity and social justice within and beyond our school walls.

  • Support parent/family community events (e.g., Back to School Nights, conferences, admissions events, etc.)  

  • Model and promote expectations aligned with the school’s values and Quaker ethos

  • Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary learning and school initiatives

• Additional Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and engage with students during lunch, recess, and transitions

  • Chaperone field trips and special events

  • Participate actively in professional development and continuous learning opportunities

Qualifications

• Educational and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in the subject or related area required; Master of Arts in the subject or another field (preferred)

  • 3-5 years of teaching experience preferred, preferably at the middle school level 

  • Experience with multi-sensory instruction and differentiation in the middle grades instruction.

• Skills, Knowledge & Attributes:

  • Extensive knowledge of at least two of the following content areas: environmental science, biology, astronomy, chemistry and physics

  • Strong classroom management skills  

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 

  • A demonstrated commitment to Quaker values and fostering an inclusive, equitable learning environment

  • Skilled in forming strong, supportive relationships with students ages 10–14
