Job Summary:

Paideia is an independent, progressive  pre-K through 12 college-preparatory school in the Emory University area of Atlanta. The high school enrolls approximately 465 students. The curriculum consists of extensive offerings in English, social sciences, mathematics, foreign languages, natural and physical sciences, art, and music. Class size averages 15 students.

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

High school teachers teach four classes during the school day which goes from 8:30 AM until 3:10 PM. Many students follow an honors curriculum that includes beginning French or Spanish in Junior High (7 & 8th grade) and entering language 2 in 9th grade, and Language 3 or 3 Honors in 10th. In 11th and 12th grade, students have the opportunity to Lit and Film, Culture and Civilizations in both Spanish and French as our highest course offerings. 

 

This position would include teaching 4 classes of French at all levels, academic advising for 8-10 high school students and weekly faculty meetings.  Teachers are also asked to create and teach elective courses for each of the two short-terms. Faculty may choose to act as a club or student activity sponsor or to coach one of the many school sports teams.  

 

In addition to teaching responsibilities in both long terms and short terms, faculty have an advisory group of 10-12 students. Faculty members are required to attend weekly faculty meetings, participate in professional development training, support student programming days and events, and a list of things that can come up in the day in the life of a teacher.

 

Required Skills and Abilities:

 

The position requires flexibility and confidence to teach all levels of language. The Modern Language department uses a communicative, proficiency-based approach grounded in cultural learning and skill development. Candidates should feel comfortable and have  experience teaching upper level language courses. 

 

Important personal qualities include love of learning, interest in and demonstrated ability to teach and support adolescents, a sense of humor, organizational skill, energy and the ability to work effectively with a group of colleagues while demonstrating self direction and creativity with own class activities and curriculum enrichment. Flexibility and comfort with a fluctuation in teacher course offerings from year to year are key qualities within the Modern Language department.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

We are looking for someone who has a degree in French or Language teaching with a concentration in French and at least 3-5 years of teaching experience. A candidate with Spanish teaching experience is a plus but not required. BA is required, MA is preferred.
