Palisades Episcopal School is seeking a middle school science teacher who will deliver interactive, innovative lessons for grades 5-8 students. Applicants must possess strong communication skills, a knowledge of subject area, a passion for educating middle schoolers, a strong work ethic, and a fun, collaborative spirt. The candidate will work in concert with a team of middle school teachers to foster belonging and strong relationships with students and families. The candidate will be an integral part of the annual implementation of a problem-based learning project, as well as in the regular development of strong, passionate, open-minded, joy-filled young adults.

*NC teaching certification is not a requirement in independent schools.



●      Demonstrates a desire to meaningfully integrate technology into the classroom.

●      Employs a variety of teaching methods to engage different learning styles and ability levels in the classroom

●      Engages students in project-based tasks designed to build students’ conceptual and procedural understanding

●      Prepares motivating and stimulating lessons that reflect knowledge of the curriculum, child development, and student abilities

●      Encourages an inclusive classroom that accepts the different perspectives and backgrounds of the students, fosters global citizenship, and elicits a greater understanding of the world around them

●      Utilizes a variety of assessments and data in the classroom to develop lessons and instructional activities as needed

●      Updates curriculum and materials as needed

●      Fosters a classroom community that effectively manages students by engaging them in dynamic learning, developing their moral compasses, and evoking their sense of empathy and connection to each other.

Teaching and Learning Environment:

●      Creates a learning environment that is motivating and age-appropriate, setting clear expectations for classwork and homework while maintaining current books and instructional resources that support classroom learning

●      Seeks to actively know students’ strengths and weaknesses and responds promptly and with care to parent concerns. Communicates effectively with parents, colleagues, and administrators.

●      Maintains an accurate and organized system for monitoring student grades and records. Meets reporting deadlines and requirements and follows school-wide procedures for reporting grades.

●      Prepares well-thought-out and thorough conferences and written documentation on student progress.

●      Maintains substitute plans and engages substitutes in advance when needed and when possible

●      Demonstrates strong classroom management skills.

 Professional Development:

●      Demonstrates a willingness to learn, grow, and improve as an educator.

●      Continues to update knowledge of content area(s) taught.

●      Engages in goal setting and review process with assigned administrator.

●      Attends and participates appropriately in full, divisional, and departmental/team faculty meetings.

●      Maintains a positive attitude and approach

●      Represents the School in the larger community in a positive manner

●      Assists with project and school-wide initiatives

●      Engages in other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor or management


●      Bachelor’s degree required/Masters or Doctorate degree preferred

●      Experience in a classroom setting

●      Excellent written and verbal communication skills

●      Demonstrated success in professional development

 QUALIFICATIONS: The middle school program is a high-quality, advanced program based on the latest academic research into best practices. It has high expectations for content mastery as its foundation. In terms of outcomes, our students should consistently match or exceed the Independent School norms based on the ERB Test of Basic Skills (spring test) and the ISEE admissions test for high school placement.
