Job Title: Security Officer 

Department: Head of School, Safety and Security Team

Reports to: Head of School

Full-time: 10 Months August -June

 Job Summary: The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors at Palisades Episcopal School. This position will work to foster positive relationships with the PES community while also working in tandem with existing administrative practices and building procedures to maintain order, prevent crime, and assist with and develop the safety operations of the school.


  • Maintain and assist with the development and enhancement of the school safety and security procedures and protocols.
  • Ensure the security, safety and well-being of all students, faculty, staff and visitors at Palisades Episcopal School.
  • Serve as a school liaison to all emergency departments and related agencies and gather information from them regarding any criminal activities or emergency situations in the surrounding areas.
  • Patrol and monitor assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to determine, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school policies/safety procedures.
  • Detect, investigate and report all unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  • Monitor security and surveillance systems, communicate necessary information and facilitate the appropriate emergency response.
  • Notify administrative staff, police, fire department and/or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Assist administrators, staff and emergency personnel in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Monitor the school calendar to ensure awareness of events and/or changes in the regular schedule of the school.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and working the security detail at special events.
  • Work with law enforcement officers to conduct and participate in all training as determined appropriate.
  • Make rapid and appropriate decisions during stressful situations.
  • Respond to incoming security calls according to established procedures.
  • Respond to critical incidents and investigate to determine the cause then take appropriate action.
  • Assist injured persons and determine the appropriate action in a timely manner, including contacting emergency personnel when necessary.
  • Patrol the school perimeter and facilities regularly. Conduct regular security checks of school grounds, including the school buildings, ensuring that access is limited to approved and specified points of entry.
  • Supervise community events/activities and serve as a security presence at the school (as assigned) to ensure compliance with school safety and security procedures and Board policy.
  • Intervene in activities that may result in result in a safety and/or security hazard and encourage students not to participate in such conduct.
  • Help supervise the arrival and dismissal of students.
  • Intercept visitors and check for proper identification and escort them to exits if not authorized.
  • Maintain a security log of all incidents occurring during a shift.
  • Maintain contact and be accessible to school administrators via cellular phone and/or two-way radio.
  • Honor and observe all safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures at school.
  • Interact in a Christ-like manner and serve as a role model to all students.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid certification.


  • Excellent problem-solving and people management skills.
  • Computer literate.
  • Ability to review and evaluate operating procedures and recommend improvement.
  • Strong ability to provide a very high level of customer service to the school and community.
  • Ability to prepare and brief high-level and sensitive information reports as required.
  • Knowledge of technical communication systems, programs, and equipment during daily operations and emergencies.


  • Minimum of 5 years experience in law enforcement, having retired or separated in good standing.
  • Successfully pass an FBI fingerprint criminal background investigation, physical fitness examination, drug/alcohol screening and mental health evaluation.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Strong people and process management skills.
  • Must be able to follow instructions, meet attendance and punctuality guidelines, respond to requests for service, and take responsibility for his/her own actions.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills and a strong ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Display courtesy and sensitivity and have the ability to manage difficult emotional situations.


  • Must be in good physical shape and have the ability to sit, kneel, stoop, climb stairs and walk for extended periods of time. Must not have any limitations of motion, and vision and hearing should be rated as acceptable to obtain the required driver’s license.
  • Must have the manual dexterity to dial a telephone, key a two-way radio, operate a keyboard and use lock and key devices.
  • During an emergency, the ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment while maintaining the ability to articulate and communicate in an effective manner.
  • Have the visual acuity necessary to observe and comprehend student movement.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing, comprehend and perform functions from oral and written instructions and from observing others.
