Saint Mary’s School is an independent, Episcopal, college-preparatory, boarding and day school for girls in grades 9–12. The School is the fourth oldest girls’ boarding and day school in the country and is located on a beautiful 23-acre campus in the heart of Raleigh, within walking distance to many restaurants and attractions the City of Oaks has to offer.  Raleigh-Durham, NC is ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States by US News & World Report.

Saint Mary’s School is offering a unique and exciting opportunity to work on a beautiful historic campus for the 2024-25 year. This benefited position possibly offers campus housing provided by the School where Residential Faculty members can participate in a vibrant campus life with other families and students and enjoy meals in the dining hall.

We are seeking faculty members who are looking for opportunities to share in the residential-life responsibilities and engage in the community by coaching a sport and/or coordinating extra-curricular activities in the evenings or weekends.

As a boarding school, a Saint Mary’s student’s experience expands beyond the school day; therefore, the Dean of Students oversees all areas of student life for both day and boarding students. This position also oversees the Student Support Services, working with a team of professionals to meet the needs and gifts of all Saint Mary’s School students for the health and wellness of mind, body, and soul.  A Saint Mary’s student experience is stronger for all because of the leadership and wellness components offered. Regular evaluations of all elements of student life will be the Dean’s main areas of oversight. Saint Mary’s is committed to investing in its people and its program. The Dean will help guide the student life team and mentor student leaders to embrace the “Girl Centered/Girl Lead” philosophy. The Dean of Students will also oversee Residential Life and assist in offering a best-in-class program. 

The Dean of Students reports directly to the Assistant Head of School for Student Affairs and plays a key role in shaping the overall student experience.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead, develop, and sustain a comprehensive student wellness program that is aligned with the school’s mission and achieves the school’s strategic plan and vision.

  • Provides strategic vision and leadership of mission-aligned programming that cultivates an environment where girls thrive, experience joy, and discover their own balance.
  • Oversees student discipline and serves as the school’s communicator with students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding student discipline.
  • Responsible for the management, leadership, training, and professional development of student life staff and faculty in accordance with best practices in independent boarding schools.
  • Communicates important information to appropriate constituents frequently, in a timely and comprehensive manner, especially concerning particulars of issues relating to culture and climate.
  • Serves as the co-liaison to the Parents Association with Institutional Advancement.
  • Provide opportunities for student leadership development.
  • Partners with the Dean of Academic Innovation to provide a comprehensive educational program primarily focusing on programming for student leadership, spiritual, relational, emotional, and life skills development.
  • Serves as an advocate for students, addressing their individual needs and concerns.
  • Oversees Residential Life to assist in providing a best-in-class boarding experience.
  • Creates and publishes a comprehensive annual activities calendar.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to create a positive, inclusive school culture that celebrates diversity and fosters community spirit.
  • Oversee the institutional initiatives around the community and belonging to ensure the implementation of various professional learning opportunities, curriculum content implementations, and associated partnerships and contracts.
  • Overall budget responsibility for the Dean of Students areas of responsibility, including efficient and effective use of human resources.
  • Continuous evaluation of all student life areas in order to achieve continuous improvement.

The Dean of Students is a residential position. It will be necessary to perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community and the academic program as required by your position or requested by your manager/supervisor.

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred, and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in education with proven success as a senior administrator in the areas of student and residential life or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Generally works in a standard office environment.
  • May work in varied extreme outside weather conditions during special activities or events.
  • Works in a fast-paced environment, dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and contacts.
  • May work at a desk on a phone and/or in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to stand for periods of time.
  • Ability to move around campus, including walking up and down stairs.
  • Regularly sit, talk, hear, and interact with students, parents, employees, board members, and visitors.
  • Be able to travel short and long distances by car, bus, or airplane.
  • Ability to drive School vehicles with a valid driver’s license.
