Job Description and Qualifications
FRA seeks an experienced college counseling professional to support the college search and application process for upper school students. This position will work with students and parent constituents in grades 8-12 to ensure quality counseling and programming while promoting college admission awareness in an approachable, student-centered culture. Qualified candidates will have a bachelor's degree (master's preferred), experience and understanding of the selective college admission process either working in the college admission environment or college counseling office in an independent day or boarding school; a desire to advocate for students, excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills, an ability to accomplish tasks in a deadline-driven environment, and a sensitivity to the needs of students and families from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise students and families on course selection and four-year planning
  • Collaborate with the director of college counseling to implement and develop programming for students in grades 8-12 and their parents on college exploration and preparation
  • Work with a caseload of approximately forty rising seniors meeting with students and parents to help build appropriate college lists
  • Write personal, detailed recommendation letters and manage school document submission for a junior/senior caseload
  • Schedule and manage college representative visits to campus via RepVisits platforms
  • Read and submit teacher recommendations for each student in their caseload
  • Brainstorm with and edit college essays for students in their caseload
  • Empower students to manage the details of their application process while supporting their needs
  • Build and maintain relationships with college admission officers and community partners
  • Travel to professional conferences (NACAC, SACAC, ACCIS), networking events, and college visits
  • Serve as Upper School Testing Coordinator, organizing logistics/administration for standardized testing (PSAT, SAT School Day, and AP exams)
  • Plan and lead an out-of-town Interim trip for sophomores and juniors
  • Serve as an academic advisor to a small cohort of students
  • The ability to coach a sport or teach one class (highly desirable)

Qualifications: 

  • 3-5 years of experience in college counseling or selective college admissions
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with Naviance or Scoir, CommonApp, and Slate
  • Eloquent storyteller with strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; team player, writer/editor with attention to detail
  • Ability to set priorities, and complete work promptly, often working with multiple competing deadlines
