Employment Type: 10 months, full time, benefits eligible

Work Days/Hours: M-F / 8am-4pm / this position requires occasional after-school, evening and weekend commitments for special school events and meetings

Start Date: We will consider applicants for either January 2, 2024 or August 2024

Paideia is a pre-K-12 college preparatory school in the Emory University area of Atlanta. The high school enrolls 450 students. The high school curriculum consists of extensive offerings in English, social sciences, mathematics, modern languages, natural and physical sciences, art and music. Class size averages 15 students.

The academic year is divided into two long terms of approximately 15 weeks and two short terms of 4 weeks. During the long terms, students attend 6 hour-long classes covering the traditional disciplines. The short terms are designed to allow intensive study in a particular area of the curriculum. They also provide students with the opportunity to go on extended science field trips, to perform in the annual full-scale musical production, or to fulfill their off-campus community service internship requirement.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

High school teachers teach four classes during the school day. This position includes 4 sections of all levels in Spanish. The Spanish Department course offerings cover the sequential levels 1-3H along with a number of Themes and Seminar level courses, such as: Adv. Spanish Literature and Film; Adv. Spanish Culture and Civilization; and Adv. Spanish Expression, covering different modes of communication. The Modern Language department uses a communicative, proficiency-based approach grounded in cultural learning and skill development.

Other responsibilities include academic advising of 8-10 students and weekly faculty meetings. Faculty may also choose to act as a club or student activity sponsor or to coach one of the many school sports teams. Other duties may be assigned.This position reports directly to the High School Principal.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

We are looking for someone who has a strong Spanish instruction background and at least 3 years of classroom experience using a variety of teaching methods. The Modern Language department uses a communicative, proficiency-based approach grounded in cultural learning and skill development. This position requires confidence in teaching all levels, demonstrating strength with teaching advanced level courses as well as beginning levels and their correspondingly younger students. Teachers are also asked to create and teach elective courses for each of the two short-terms.

Important personal qualities include love of learning, interest in and demonstrated ability to teach and support adolescents; a sense of humor, organizational skill, energy and the ability to work effectively with a group of colleagues while demonstrating self-direction and creativity with class activities and curriculum enrichment. Flexibility and comfort with a fluctuation in teacher course offerings from year to year are key qualities within the modern language department. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and experience teaching classroom Spanish.
