Woodward Academy Lower School counselors empower students in grades 4-6 to reach their fullest potential by providing a comprehensive school counseling program to discover, develop, and apply learning strategies, social skills, and self-management skills as guided by the American School Counseling Association National Model.

Position Summary: Provide a comprehensive counseling program for all students. Consult with teachers, parents, staff, and outside agencies to enhance student academic success. Support for academic and social/emotional development. Provide a program that supports school activities and educational programs.

 

 Essential Functions: 

  • Implement the elementary guidance curriculum;
  • Counsel individuals and small groups of children toward social and emotional growth;
  • Consult with and support teachers, parents and staff regarding children’s needs;
  • Collaborate with and make referrals to appropriate community support resources (special programs, specialists, outside agencies) for students and families.
  • Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school;
  • Participate in and facilitate student development & achievement related conferences with parents, students, teachers and/or administrators
  • Plan and evaluate the counseling program;
  •  Pursue continuous professional growth & development;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully. An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Three years of experience as a counselor preferred, independent school experience a plus.
  • Master’s degree in Counseling or School Counseling;  Georgia School Counseling Certification, LPC, and/or NBCC
  • Ability to present information effectively and to respond to questions.
  • Ability to articulate ideas clearly, both orally and in writing.
  •  Ability to a) define problems; b) collect and analyze data; c) draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers and school administrators, using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to accurately interpret procedures and regulations and ensure appropriate implementation. 
  • Demonstrated skill in using Google Suite.

 
The Lower School Counselor position is an exempt, salaried, ten-month position.  Salary is commensurate with education and experience.  Benefits are substantial.
