This position involves teaching both Life and Physical Science to 7th and 8th-grade students in the Transition Learning Support Program. The MS science teacher should be a leader in inquiry-based instruction and exhibit enthusiasm for science, engineering, and STEAM.
 
Instructional:
  • Prepares motivating lessons that reflect knowledge of the curriculum, adolescent development, and student abilities
  • Utilizes a variety of teaching methods to engage different styles of learning and ability levels in the classroom
  • Utilizes a variety of teaching and learning strategies to teach grade-level content to bright students who have learning disabilities, processing weaknesses, and/or attention deficit
  • Utilizes data to design instructional activities and assessments as needed
  • Demonstrates a high level of responsiveness to student needs, including the implementation of differentiated teaching strategies       
  • Encourages an inclusive classroom that accepts the different perspectives and backgrounds of the students and elicits a greater understanding of the world around them with a global perspective 
  • Meaningfully integrates technology into the classroom, including but not limited to, Google Apps Suite, Microsoft Office, Interactive Whiteboard, and other engaging tools in a 1:1 iPad environment.
 
Teaching and Learning Environment:
  • Creates a learning environment that is motivating and age appropriate, setting clear expectations for classwork and homework.
  • Seeks to actively know students’ strengths and weaknesses and collaborates with the Program Director and other Transition teachers assessing student profiles and designing plans for maximum student learning and achievement
  • Communicates effectively with parents, mainstream and Transition colleagues, and administrators; responds promptly and with care to parent concerns
  • Maintains an accurate and organized system for monitoring student grades and records. Meets reporting deadlines and requirements and follows school-wide procedures for reporting grades. 
  • Demonstrates strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Maintains substitute plans and engages substitutes in advance when needed and when possible. 
 
Professional Development: 
  • Engages in goal setting and demonstrates a willingness to learn, grow, and improve as a teacher 
  • Continues to update knowledge of content area(s) taught 
  • Attends and participates appropriately in Academy/school/department faculty meetings.
 
School and Community: 
  • Maintains a positive attitude and approach 
  • Supports colleagues and collaborates as a team player with colleagues and administration
  • Represents the Academy in the larger community in a positive manner 
  • Assists with projects and school-wide initiatives and has the ability and willingness to contribute to the Academy through coaching or other co-curricular activities.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor or management
 
Minimum Job Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in Science Education or Learning Disabilities/Special Education from an accredited institution of higher learning; master’s degree in science or education of student with learning disabilities preferred
  • Valid Georgia teaching certificate preferred
  • 2+ years of successful teaching of students with mild learning disabilities required  
  • 2+ years of successful Middle School teaching preferred
  • Independent school experience preferred, but not required
  
The Teacher, Middle School Science position is an exempt, salaried, ten-month position.  Salary is commensurate with education and experience.  Benefits are substantial. EOE
