Full time Teacher

Job Description

Southampton Academy, located in Courtland, Virginia, is a coeducational independent day school enrolling 380 students preschool three through grade 12. The vision of SA is to be the premier independent school in the region, educating the whole student—cognitively, socially, and emotionally—to prepare them for a rapidly changing world and their own personal future.

The Academy is seeking qualified candidates for the position of upper school English teacher (full-time). Candidates should have a comfort level teaching sophomore level English with an emphasis on writing and reading (novels). Classroom sizes range from 10-16 students. This is a full-time position, and the instructor will teach American Literature (11th grade), English 9, and a combination of semester-long courses in focus areas of their choosing (i.e. Southern Authors, Literature of Revolution, Journalism, etc.). The instructor will also serve as adviser to a group of upper school students and sponsor one extra-curricular activity (i.e. forensics society, drama club, etc.). The ideal candidate will be interested in working with students with a variety of learning styles in a rural independent school setting and willing to provide extra help to assist with comprehension and mastery. Preference will also be given to candidates able to coach a sport, especially cross-country, basketball, or soccer.

While previous teaching experience is preferred, the Academy will consider candidates interested in moving into the teaching profession from other related industries (law, clerical, freelance, online, etc.) or new teachers, provided candidates are open to strong mentoring and support.

Interested candidates should complete the employment application (linked here) and send a cover letter and resume/CV with three references to Ida Gibbs, the Executive Assistant to the Heads, at igibbs@southamptonacademy.org
