Middle School History Teacher (beginning with the 2023-24 school year)
Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school for 1,650 students in preschool through grade 12. The School is seeking a Middle School History Teacher who is prepared to instruct 6th or 7th grade students in United States history and 8th grade students in World Regions and People in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Middle School division.
Responsibilities:
- Instruct students in history in accordance with curriculum requirements and objectives, making use of technology, textbooks, primary sources, and other instructional materials as appropriate.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments that address multiple learning styles.
- Develop the analytical abilities of students in both verbal and written expression.
- Evidence enthusiasm for and continued development of content knowledge in subject matter.
- Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and where respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
- Participate as an active team member within the History Department, the Middle School faculty, and the School community, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
The successful candidate will have:
- A Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree from an accredited college or university, with a degree in field preferred. Certification from an education program and/or an advanced degree in field are advantages.
- Three or more years of teaching middle school History or Social Studies in grades 5-8 preferred.
- Experience in project-based learning, primary source instruction, and experiential history lesson-planning.
- Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom.
- Ability to support the school’s diversity and inclusion efforts. The Middle School History Teacher will display a continuous commitment to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We desire candidates who will contribute to the school’s efforts to continue creating a more inclusive and equitable community where all individuals can develop a sense of belonging.
Reporting: The Middle School History teacher will report directly to the Head of the Middle School and will take direction from the History Department Chair.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
