University School of Jackson Middle and Upper School Counselor

The University School of Jackson seeks an experienced mental health expert for the 2023-2024 school year to maximize the academic, social, and emotional potential of every student.  The counselor should be an expert in adolescent character development and mental health and is responsible for the management of student accommodation plans.  The counselor should demonstrate strong leadership skills and should lead the social/emotional education initiatives of the Middle and Upper Schools.  Additionally, this team member may be asked to contribute to the broader life of the school through duties, coaching, and/or sponsoring extracurricular programs.

The Middle and Upper School Counselor will:

●      Counsel students individually and in group settings; assist with problem solving and offer solutions regarding academic, social, and emotional issues.

●      Lead the management and implementation of a robust Character Education Advisory program for the Middle and Upper Schools. 

●      Develop, implement, and improve parent/family education focused on student mental and emotional well-being.

●      Work with administration, teachers, and families about how best to support students’ academic, social, and emotional needs.

●      Work closely with the Jones Academic Center to manage student accommodation plans and manage confidential student records.

●      Work in tandem with the testing coordinator to analyze and present standardized testing results to administration, faculty, and parents; advocate for student needs and accommodations on standardized tests.

●      Communicate with and recommend local resources or practitioners/agencies that may be beneficial to families; refer to outside agencies with discretion and follow up such referrals.  When appropriate, funcion as a liaison between professional agencies and the school community. 

●      Provide professional development, education, and resources to faculty and parents on topics such as adolescent development, standardized testing interpretation, peer relationships, and group dynamics.

●      Build relationships with students and provide a safe space, accessible to students.

●      Collaborate with other faculty and staff to develop partnerships, implement the SEL program, complete research, and increase understanding of the link between character development, academics, and the overall school culture.

●      Possess strong character with an absolute drive for excellence, a team-oriented spirit, and a commitment to meeting the academic, emotional, and social needs of students.

●      Be a curious and collaborative lifelong learner dedicated to facilitating and encouraging the growth of students and colleagues.

●      Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned.

●      Follow and comply with written and verbal directions and expectations of the Head of School, Upper School Director, and Middle School Director.

Bachelor’s degree and experience in a school setting are required, experience with independent school counseling and masters of school counseling or psychology are preferred. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
