Job Description

Jackson Preparatory School in Flowood, MS, seeks an energetic and experienced leader who is committed to advancing the educational experience for students and faculty through leadership, determination, and innovation.

The Chief Operating Officer (hereinafter referred to as the COO) will report directly to the Head of School and serve on the executive leadership team. The COO will assist the Head of School with operations of the school, and strategies for continued growth in providing the highest quality educational experience consistent with our mission, values, and strategic direction.

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

Qualification Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business is required.  MBA, CPA, and/or other advanced degrees are desirable. 
  • Should have significant experience in accounting, finance, information technology, facilities management, construction, and business operations management of salaried employees. Forecasting and strategy development / implementation experience is important. 
  • Should have an understanding of and an appreciation for an independent college preparatory school education. 
  • Should have strong interpersonal, writing and presentation skills and be able to communicate and interpret the business operations and physical plant to the school’s faculty and staff, patrons and constituents.
  • Should have experience utilizing Microsoft tools such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; along with Google system tools such as Drive, Sheets, Docs, and Slides.

 Responsibilities Include:

  • To serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, assisting the Head of School with strategic goals and the operation of the school.
  • To provide staff support, in conjunction with the Head of School, to the Finance and Audit Committee, the Building and Grounds Committee, and the Foundation Board of Trustees and Prep Inc. Board of Trustees.
  • To serve as the main liaison with the Prep Inc. Board to ensure governance requirements are maintained.
  • To develop the school's annual operating budget and strategic financial plans in conjunction with the Head of School and Foundation Board Treasurer.
  • To prepare a monthly operating statement for the Head of School and the Foundation Board of Trustees.
  • To supervise the work of the controller and business office personnel and to keep an accurate continuous record of the cash and financial position of the school and manage the financial operation of the school so that the institution remains financially stable.
  • To review the monthly report of expenditures for use of each individual budget center within the school.
  • To oversee the annual audit of the school’s financial records and financial positions.  (Controller takes responsibility for preparation for the audit.)
  • To oversee compliance on the schools 403B retirement plan and execute all ERISA reporting requirements.
  • To oversee all school purchasing, financial investments, banking activities, loan structures, accounts receivable and accounts payable, and all payroll and benefits programs.
  • To coordinate the school’s tuition assistance program.
  • To address any financial matters relative to student withdrawals or delinquent accounts.
  • To develop with the Head of School programs regarding salaries and benefits for all personnel.
  • To oversee the Medical Insurance benefit program for the institution.
  • To supervise the Controller, Director of Physical Plant, Head of Technology, and other related employees.
  • To supervise the School Store (Patriot Shop).
  • To manage risk at the school to ensure the safety of personnel and students in their use of the facilities and to maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property and to cover the liability of the school as well as handle claims management.
  • To support the Head of Technology, along with the Division Heads, and provide the school with the technological infrastructure necessary for the operation of the school.
  • To ensure the effective management of all contract labor, including food service and janitorial services.
  • To serve and provide input regarding school needs in relationship to property issues to the Foundation and Prep Inc. Board committees or task forces.
  • To evaluate the condition of the school’s physical assets and make recommendations for maintenance improvements and renewal.
  • To work with architects and contractors on any building projects or improvements.
  • To work with the Director of Physical Plant and the Director of School Safety to ensure adequate security of school facilities.
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
  • To support the school and its leadership, and participate in school life.
