Job Description

Spartanburg Day School is currently seeking a VISTAS Director for the 2023-24 school year. The VISTAS (Varied Instructional Strategies for Teaching All Students) program offers students assistance beyond the classroom. Students participating in the VISTAS program experience improved academic skills, individualized and customized instruction, general curriculum support and instruction in a one-to-one or small group setting.

The VISTAS Director is an integral part of each Division and works daily and closely with all of the constituencies of the School including leadership, faculty, parents, and students. The VISTAS Director must have an educational background and professional experience in teaching students with learning differences and possess the ability to guide the education of those students from preschool age through 12th grade. The VISTAS Director must also be able to adapt to changes in the educational climate as well as plan for the future needs of the school.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related subject, required

  • Master’s degree in Education or Education of Students with Learning Disabilities, required

  • State teaching license, preferred

  • Certificate in Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Reading, preferred


  • Previous teaching experience with students with learning differences, required

  • Previous experience within an independent school, preferred

  • Previous leadership experience, required


  • Thorough understanding of learning and learners and the best practices in education for differentiation.     

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to foster positive relationships among the constituencies of the school.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact as well as honor the need for confidentiality in high-stress situations.

All SDS faculty must successfully pass a background check upon hire and periodically during employment. SDS participates in the E-verify program.
