The Opportunity:

Southern Teachers Agency is assisting Porter-Gaud School in the search for its next Head of Lower School.   Today, the academic program in the Lower School is intentionally designed to recognize students’ abilities, unearth new talents, and create trusting student-teacher relationships. With the help of amazing teachers, students are challenged to be their best selves while learning in a supportive and caring environment that values mistakes as a natural part of the learning process.   

The school seeks an exceptional academic leader who is student-centered and collaborative and has a growth mindset around students’ social and emotional development.  A champion for the school’s Episcopal identity and creating a community where all individuals develop a sense of belonging, the Head of Lower School will be a lifelong learner who stays current in educational research and best practices, supports faculty well-being and professional growth, and prioritizes trusting relationships with all stakeholders.  With the Assistant Head of Lower School departing this June and the Head of Lower School retiring in June 2024, Porter-Gaud envisions a co-leadership transition.  This includes an opportunity for the incoming Head to assist with hiring the next Assistant Head of Lower School to begin July 2024.

The Head of Lower School is responsible for coordinating activities and events with the school calendar; hiring and mentoring excellent teachers; supervising and evaluating instruction; and coordinating professional development. The person in this position must manage the division budget, collaborate in enrollment management, and communicate well with diverse constituents. Most importantly, the Head of Lower School should be a professional of unwavering integrity and an experienced advocate for lower school education who will engage enthusiastically in all aspects of school life at Porter-Gaud.

 Reporting directly to the Head of School as a member of the Administrative Team and the Executive Council, the Head will lead a Lower School staff that includes an Assistant Head, Director of Intercultural Education, Counselor, Learning Services Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant.
